Scotch whiskey may be called a distillate produced in a Scottish distillery, at least 40 percent alcohol by volume share, has matured at least three years in oak barrels in bonded areas in Scotland and is especially popular as a single malt or blended whisky. Scotch Whisky is currently burned in 99 Scottish distilleries (end of 2009) in different whisky regions. The distilleries and therefore the whisky produced there are assigned to different regions, the best known are surely the Speyside, Islay, the Highlands and the Hebrides Islands and Lowlands.
Depending distillery whisky reaches the optimum balance between distillery character and influence the maturation by different many years. With the majority of fires this time is between 12 and 15 years.
