Founded in 1952 by Masataka Taketsuru in Hokkaido, is Nikka now, as a subsidiary of Asahi Brewing, the second largest whisky manufacturer in Japan. Taketsuru whose family in Japan since 1733 operates its own sake distillery, emigrated in 1918 to Scotland from to study at the University of Glasgow Chemistry. During his studies he worked among others in a nearby whisky distillery. The art of whisky distilling fascinated the young students so that he decided to former export order from then on to make his fortune, and he was successful in his native Japan. 1940 created Taketsuru its first own brand and finally succeeded in the 1960s after a few awards for the big breakthrough. The Nikka whisky is characterized by its fruity character and balanced taste with a long finish. For its production of distillers united excellent whiskeys from distilleries of Nikka-Group to create a stunningly complex flavor. Today Nikka Whisky Yoichi and Miyagikyo operates two distillery in Japan and with Ben Nevis one in Scotland. In addition to the brands and Yoichi Miyagikyo with Single Cask and Blended Malt bottlings a Pure Malt Blended whisky is sold under the name of the founder Taketsuru. The Nikka whiskys have received several awards and are today certainly with the best whiskys in the world.
