The Campbeltown single malt Scotch whisky marketed as Longrow by Springbank is heavily peated (55 ppm phenol), is double distilled and has a character reminiscent of the whiskies from the island of Islay. Longrow was the result of an experiment in 1973, when Hedley Wright, then chairman of Springbank, wanted to prove that Campbeltown could also produce a heavily peated whisky in the style of the Islay malts. At this time, the smoky whiskies of Islay were growing in popularity.
The first distillation took place in 1973 and the first Longrow single malt appeared in 1985. The Longrow Peated Campbeltown whisky was only produced once a year in the early years, which today contributes to the fact that the bottlings are difficult to obtain and old whiskies in particular, as well as the few single cask whiskies still available on the market, are among the special rarities among collectors and connoisseurs today.
The distillery was founded in 1824 by John Beith and Co. on the street of the same name in Campbeltown. Alongside Dalaruan, Lochhead and Meadowburn, it was the fourth distillery to be licensed in Campbeltown that year. In 1852, it came into the ownership of John Ross, initially as a partner alongside John Beith, later as John Ross Co. who ran it until his death in 1886. William and James Greenlees took over the business and ran it until its closure in 1896. The distillery was located on Wells Close between Glebe Street and Longrow and was adjacent to the Springbank distillery. Some of the buildings have survived to this day and are used by Springbank for bottling, for example.
The range of Longrow whiskies available today is mostly between 9-11 years old and comes predominantly from refill bourbon casks, sherry and rum cask bottlings are rather rare and there are now also some experimental whiskies with a finish in different wine casks. A decisive difference to Springbank (2.5 times distilled) and Hazelburn (3 times distilled) is that Longrow is distilled twice. This contributes to its more robust and oily character.
The Longrow Peated Single Malt is bottled in its natural form, the whiskies are not colored and not chill-filtered to underline the high standards of its origin and quality. Today, Longrow is a powerful, heavily peated and double-distilled single malt from the Springbank distillery, offering an intense taste experience that appeals to fans of smoky whiskies and at the same time reflects the characteristic complexity and maritime notes of Campbeltown.
Many of the Longrow Campbeltown single malt Scotch whiskies have received multiple awards in recent years for their exceptional quality, receiving 96 out of 100 points from Wine Enthusiast and are a specialty for connoisseurs of excellent Scotch whiskies. In our whisky store you will find selected Longrow vintage Scotch whiskies and rare single cask bottlings that are virtually unavailable today.
