Ichiros Malt The Final Vintage of Hanyu Cask No. 6093 Japanese Single Malt Whisky Cask Strength 59.0% ABV - one of 349 bottles and an exclusive single malt whisky from the closed distillery Hanyu
Hanyu distillery was owned by Toa-Shuzo in Saitama prefecture, north of Tokyo. It stopped distilling in 2000, and their stock was handed over to Ichiro Akuto, the grandson of the founder, who established a new company called Venture Whisky. The last remaining stocks of Hanyu whisky can sometimes be found in the market today, sold under the Ichiro s Malt label. Hanyu Whisky Distillery history starts with the Akuto family who started a family business in 1626. It was not until the 19th generation of the family that Hanyu Distillery was built in Hanya City around 1941 and finally received a licence to produce alcohol in 1946. The family did not try to produce whisky for nearly another 35 years when the obtained two pot stills and the ability to produce Scotch type whisky. Every since this date there has been a change towards producing Single Malts mainly for the Japanese markets, but more recently the world as a whole. There first main Single Malt was Chichibu in 1990. There was a main problem with the production of Single Malts and that is the maturing time that is necessary until your malt is ready to be consumed and this can be hard as all companies need income regularly. The distillery changed hands a number of times during the next few years and some of the stock that was in the process of being matured was in serious trouble of being throw away until Ichiro Akuto a relative of the founder of the Hanyu Distillery stepped in to save the Malts and founded a new company called Venture Whisky. This company then started to produce malts themselves and in turn the whisky distillery at Hanyu is now established as a world producer of fine whiskies. The Number One company have a number of distilleries throughout Japan including the famous Karuizawa distillery which was established in 1955 in the foothills of Mount Asama. This whisky is produced by One Drinks Company and a special release from Ichiro Akuto - a single cask bottling of whisky from the final year of Hanyu distiller s operation. About 10 years old and bottled at cask strength without colouring or chill-filtration. A little slice and very rare example of distilling history.
