Originally founded in 1842 by George Duncan, William Cadenhead is the oldest independent bottler in Scotland and established itself as a wine merchant and independent bottler. In 1853, his brother-in-law William Cadenhead became his partner. When George Duncan died in 1858 after a short, serious illness, William Cadenhead, known as a writer, took over the business completely and renamed the company William Cadenhead. After his death on 11 December 1904, his nephew Robert W. Duthie took over the company and under his leadership and intensive advertising with the slogan By test the best, the name Cadenhead became known worldwide for its whisky and Demerara rum and made the company into the independent whisky bottling company we know today.
In 1931, during the economic review, Robert W. Duthie was run over by a tram on the way to his bank and died. The company was then run by his 2 sisters, but they were very ignorant of the wine and whisky trade and handed over the management to his long-time employee Ms Ann Oliver. Oliver proved to be a rather eccentric choice with firm ideas about how the business should be run and refused to move with the times or follow the changes in the whisky market. The result was a warehouse full of whisky, rum and gin that nobody knew the value of. Much of the extensive stock of spirits was auctioned off by the renowned auction house Christie s in 1972 and, to everyone s delight, the proceeds not only paid off the company s existing debts but also yielded a six-figure profit.
When Ann Oliver retired in the same year, the company was sold to J. and A. Mitchell and Co, the owners of Springbank and one of Scotland s oldest whisky distilleries in Campbeltown. The new owners continue to run the business with a strong sense of tradition and have greatly expanded the product range in the meantime. In addition to the wines and whisky, rum, gin and cognac are increasingly being bottled and sold.
Today, the old Dumpy Bottle whiskies from the 1970s and 1980s and exquisite single cask bottlings from the coveted Cadenhead Cask Strength Authentic Collection are particularly popular among connoisseurs, collectors and connoisseurs due to their excellent quality.
