In 2001 a previous version of Yoichi old was elected best of best by Whisky Magazine, bringing international attention at Japan. A delicious single malt from the Yoichi distillery, founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934. This bold and distinctive single malt whisky was distilled and matured at the Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido, birthplace of Nikka Whisky. The Yoichi distillery continues to adhere to techniques such as the use of coal-fired pot stills, and otherwise remains loyal to the whisky-making traditions dating back to its foundation. Strictly selected from among the malts distilled and matured for 20 years or more at the Yoichi distillery, this single malt whisky is characterized by the fragrance of aged casks, a mellow well-rounded palate, and a bold, powerful taste. An outstanding and powerful cask-strength 20 year old japanese single malt from the Yoichi distillery that previously bested some very high-profile Scottish malts at a blind tasting in 2003 and received 95 points in Jim Murray s Whisky Bible. - Nose: rich and intense. Very elegant. Peat notes are delicately supported by aromas of fresh fruit. It expresses a sense of great maturity. Resin, rosewood, and preserved apricot, it grows in depth.
- Palate: ample, sperical. A note of liquorice and frangipane. It has a smoky character, but remains delicate and nuanced. The fruitness is strong (quince, apple, black cherry). It moves from peat to ripe fruit and back again.
- Finish: long, dense. Perfectly balanced. Field flowers, sweet fruit and nuts give an autumnal and sunny sensation. It develops into rose jam.
