This Port Ellen 6. Release counts with 27 years one of the oldest official bottlings of Port Ellen. Established in 1825, Port Ellen distillery took almost two centuries to achieve the cult status it enjoys today. Since the distillery closed in 1983 demand for this classic Islay malt has risen in inverse proportion to supply, so much so that each small releases from the dwindling stocks that remain now sells out faster than the last. This very collectable Port Ellen 6th release, supremely drinkable 27 year old Islay malt was distilled in 1978 and filled from refill American Oak and refill European Oak casks in 2006. Only 4,560 bottles were released from drinks conglomerate Diageo. A complex and intriguing from Islays lost distillery, this burnished gold Port Ellen is the 6th and joint oldest release in a series. The nose is slightly phenolic and briny. Vanilla, lemon and a biscuit-like element bring distinctly sweet flavours to the nose. Smoke is at the back the whole time and creeps in right at the end, together with a light grassiness. The palate is oily, slightly coastal and salty, spicy hints (nutmeg and pepper) and honey. Hints of seafood complete the palate. Altogether the flavours are rather light, almost flighty. The finish is very long and really warming, smoke and pepper are mingling with vanilla and seafood notes. A legendary and very rare bottling from Port Ellen - a stunning whisky!
