The so-called private bottling used to be used by some distilleries for refinancing, the freshly bottled whisky or the cask or casks were sold through the mediation of a whisky trader or broker at its birth and were then allowed to mature in the duty-free warehouse of the distillery. The buyer received the ownership documents of the purchased and numbered cask and could have a sample sent to him annually if he wished and usually for an additional charge. In many distilleries, it was also possible to visit the purchased cask and the buyer could decide when and how (whether at cask strength or diluted down) the whisky would be bottled. The import was then carried out by the accruing duties such as taxes, levies, transport costs and customs duties as a rule then again via the intermediary whisky dealer and the bottled bottles were delivered there to their owner or forwarded.
