Strathisla distillery was built in 1786 on the banks of the river Isla, and today is the oldest and most picturesque distillery in the highlands of Scotland. Chivas Brothers purchased Strathisla in 1950 to safeguard this special Speyside malt for Chivas Regal. With its short, small copper stills and natural spring water, Strathisla produces a full-bodied single malt Scotch whisky. One of Strathisla oldest reserves, a very rare and well aged bottling of whisky from Gordon and MacPhail. On the instructions of John Urquhart, cask 1722 was filled with new-make spirit distilled at Strathisla Distillery on 1st November 1957. It was left to quietly mature at the distillery for many years before being transferred to Gordon and MacPhails bonded warehouse in Elgin in 1985. There the cask lay until the decision was finally taken to bottle this Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky on 15th July 2011. A great and very rare old unique Strathisla Speyside Single Malt!
The Strathisla Distillery is on the edge of Keith in Aberdeenshire in the middle of the Scottish Speyside and the name Strathisla is derived from the River Isla, which flows near the distillery. The distillery is one of the cobbled courtyard, the pagoda roofs and the gray stone walls and the old water wheel surely the finest distilleries in Scotland. In 1786, George Taylor and Alexander Milne found today distillery under the name Milltown or Milton, which was acquired in 1830 by William Longmore and is the oldest operating distillery in the Speyside. In the 1870s, then the distillery was renamed Strathisla. Round six years later, a fire broke out and damaged large parts of the distillery. 1890 the distillery was renamed in Milton. George Jay Pomeroy, owner of the distillery in 1949 had, for tax evasion jail and thus brought the existence of the distillery in danger. The water comes from the Broomhill Spring near the distillery. The distillery has a mash tun (4.84 tons) of stainless steel fermentation tanks and eleven (per 24,500 liters) of Douglas fir. The whisky is burned in two wash stills each downstream spirit still. For the bearings sherry and bourbon barrels are used. The company Chivas Brothers Ltd. took over after an auction in 1950 the distillery and restored extensively with great attention to detail and called them again Strathisla. Much of the malts of Strahisla are now used for blended whiskies of Chivas Royal and Royal Salute, there are very few real estate bottled, the Licensed bottlings from Gordon and MacPhail are generally regarded as original bottlings and have an extraordinary quality.
