Convalmore was a whisky distillery in Dufftown in the Speyside region and was founded on 2 June 1893 by a group of Glasgow businessmen, opened in 1894 and is now one of the lost distilleries. The distillery was sold to W. P. Lowrie and Co Ltd. in 1904, which was taken over by James Buchanan and Co Ltd. in 1906. On 29 October 1909, large parts of the distillery were destroyed by fire. After reconstruction, a Coffey still with a capacity of 2273 litres per hour was installed in 1910, but this was removed in 1915. Ten years later, in 1925, the Convalmore distillery was taken over by the Distillers Company Ltd (DCL) and transferred to its subsidiary Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) in 1930. In 1964, two more stills were installed in addition to the original two. The distillery has been closed since 1985. United Distillers (UD), the successor to DCL, sold the now empty plant in 1990 to William Grant and Sons, who now use it as a warehouse for Glenfiddich. Convalmore mainly produced malt whisky for blends, particularly for the Black and White and Dewar s brands. Own single malt bottlings were very rare in the days of operation.
The Convalmore single malt Scotch whiskies are now considered complex and full-bodied classic Speyside whiskies with an often rich, full- flavoured and malty character, the taste is considered fruity with the typical notes of garden fruits (apples, pears), sometimes also citrus notes or dark fruits with honey, vanilla, caramel and spices (cinnamon or nutmeg), with a longer maturation with an oily or slightly waxy texture, similar to Clynelish, but usually more subtle.
Today, bottlings from the closed Convalmore distillery are rarely available and are among the rare single malt Scotch whiskies from a lost distillery, most of which come from independent bottlers who still had or have old casks in their warehouses.
