A rare Vintage 2009 4 year old Kavalan Solist Taiwan Single Malt Whisky distilled on 24 February 2009 and bottled after over 4 years of maturation in a selected Vinho Barrique Cask with Cask No.: W090220033 on 14 August 2013 without the addition of colourants and chill filtration in an edition of 195 individually numbered bottles for La Maison du Whisky in Cask Strength at 57.7% vol.
The special Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique Single Malt Whiskies, which have received several awards for their special quality, are matured in selected wine casks, whereby both red wine and white wine casks are used for the maturation. After being used for wine, the casks are carefully scraped, toasted and burnt out to reveal the full intensity of the fruity notes before being filled with the Kavalan distillate.
The Kavalan distillery is located in Yilan County, a small coastal plain in the estuary of the Lanyang River in the northern part of the east coast of Taiwan, about 80 km southeast of Taipei. The Taiwanese indigenous people are called Kavalans, hence the name Kavalan Whisky. In 2005, T.T. Lee, founder and president of the Taiwanese food company King Car Group, fulfilled his greatest wish: his own whisky distillery. As an enthusiastic whisky lover, he had long dreamed of the idea of producing a high-quality whisky for Taiwan. However, it was only with Taiwan's accession to the WTO in 2002 and the dissolution of the state monopoly on spirits that this idea became a possibility. The chemist Ian Chang, who completed his training as a master blender in Scotland with flying colours, became the focal point of this project. The most important advisor in setting up the distillery and adapting production to the climatic conditions was the British chemist and whisky expert Dr. Jim Swan, who still actively supports the company today. In April 2005, construction of the King Car Kavalan distillery began and the first new make saw the light of day on 11th March 2006. High humidity and temperatures of 15°C above the Scottish annual average posed challenges for the team. It quickly became clear that storage periods of 12 years or more would not be possible in Taiwan. With an Angels Share of 15-18% per year, Kavalan is far above the Scottish and Irish share of 2-3%. Only spring water from the region is used for the whisky production. The special thing about this is the soft and sweet taste of the water, which ultimately contributes to the fruity character of the whisky. Only high-quality oak barrels from Europe and the USA are used for the maturation of Kavalan whisky. The barrels are mainly stored standing up. The most important reason for this is to secure the barrels against earthquakes, which occur more frequently on Taiwan. The 4 pot stills (2 wash stills and 2 spirit stills each) come from Scotland.
Both the distillery and its whiskies have won numerous international awards in recent years and have prevailed in a wide variety of blind tastings against much older colleagues. Whisky expert Jim Murray also gives the Kavalan whisky grandiose ratings in his Whisky Bible.
