The Linkwood Distillery was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown in the Speyside region of Scotland, near the town of Elgin. However, production only began in 1825 after the necessary licences were granted. He wanted to use it to increase the productivity of the Seafield Estates he managed. After Peter Brown s death, his son William Brown took over the distillery. Under his leadership, the original distillery was demolished and completely rebuilt around 1871/72 to increase capacity and improve efficiency. From 1897 to 1933 it operated under the name Linkwood-Glenlivet Distillery Co Ltd and over the years the distillery changed hands several times. In 1933, it became part of Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD), which later merged into Distillers Company Limited (DCL). Today, Linkwood is part of the Diageo spirits group.
Production was suspended during the Second World War until it was reopened in 1945 under Roderick MacKenzie. The original distillery (now known as Linkwood A) was renovated in 1962, with the stills being rebuilt and replaced. In the process, the company s own steam engine was decommissioned and production was connected to the electricity grid. To further increase production without changing the character of the whisky, a second, modern distillery (Linkwood B) with four stills was built right next door in 1971. At times, the two distilleries operated in parallel, but today only Linkwood B is used, with care being taken to preserve the traditional character.
Linkwood whisky is an important component of many well-known blended Scotch whiskies, particularly Bells, Johnnie Walker and White Horse. For this reason, official single malt bottlings from Linkwood are relatively rare, although their number has increased in recent years. However, the distillery enjoys an excellent reputation among connoisseurs and independent bottlers.
Linkwood single malt is generally described as a classic Speyside whisky, often considered elegant, complex and refined, character is typically light to medium-bodied, often with a subtle oily or waxy texture. The flavour often shows fruity and floral, floral aromas with apples (green and red), pears, sometimes citrus (orange, lemon), heather, honeysuckle and grassy or herbal hints (freshly cut grass, mint) with a pleasant sweetness reminiscent of honey, vanilla (especially when matured in ex-bourbon casks) or malt, subtle tropical fruits can also be found in older bottlings.
As the majority of Linkwood s production goes into blends, independent bottlers (Gordon and MacPhail, Signatory Vintage, Cadenhead and others) offer a wider range of Linkwood single malts of different ages and cask maturations. Linkwood is a highly appreciated Speyside single malt Scotch whisky among whisky connoisseurs and is known for its elegance, fruitiness and often subtle complexity.
