The Macallan distillery was built on the west bank of the River Spey, opposite Craigellachie in the Speyside eastern and today certainly with the most famous single malt Scotch whiskys. Here, where the Spey takes its fast run in the shadow of the Grampian Mountains, provide location and climate conditions unique for the production of malt whiskys of world renown, which is distilled there for ages: The Macallan. The distillery Macallan is one of the first legal distilleries in Scotland after for years and decades whiskey was previously burned black at this point. The distillery Macallan (since 2004 The Macallan) was built in 1824 by founder Alexander Reid, was one of the first to Glenlivet burn the license for whisky and is today among connoisseurs as a cult brand, at the since 1999 the Scottish Edrington Group is the majority shareholder. After rebuilding and extension, especially in the 50s and 60s, the number of stills was increased significantly: 1965 from 6 to 12, 1974 18 and 1975 21 pot stills. However, these are the smallest in the region Speyside and all replicas of the originals. Until the 60 years of whisky was highly sought after blend masters and has been used in numerous Blended malts. Macallan Single Malt Whisky was first bottled in 1962 and then sold only regionally in Speyside, only in 1980 was started with distribution in England. The estate with the mysterious name Easter Elchie House lies gracefully on a hill near Craigellachie on a slight hill on the west side of the Spey River. Even from a distance you can see the almost 300 year old house. One has from here a wide panoramic view over the plains, the sight of the place seems almost magical. The originally small country inn is more like a small Chateau and today is the symbol of The Macallan.
