Port Ellen 1982 20 Years Sherry Cask Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 50.0% ABV of the Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask series - one of only 666 bottles from the closed distillery Port Ellen
A special vintage 1982 20-year-old Port Ellen Islay Single Malt Whisky, matured in Sherry Cask and bottled at 50.0% abv without chill filtration and no colouring. One of only 666 bottles, this rare Islay single cask whisky from the closed distillery is now one of the coveted and rare Sherry Single Cask bottlings of Port Ellen.
The distillery Port Ellen was founded in 1825 by Alexander Kerr Mackay in Port Ellen on the Scottish island of Islay and reached 1836 in the possession of John Ramsay. 1920 sold Iain Ramsay of Kildalton, a nephew of John Ramsay, the distillery to James Buchanan and Co. and John Dewar and Sons Ltd., which merged in 1925 with Distillers Company Limited (DCL). In 1929 the distillery was closed for the first time. After modernization and doubling of stills from two to four, the distillery was then reopened in 1966. 1973 extremely spacious malthouse was built which will still supplied Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Lagavulin and partially Bunnahabhain, Kilchoman and Laphroaig. The peat used comes from the nearby Castle Hill Moor. In May 1983, the distillery Port Ellen was closed again. In 1987, sales to the United Distillers (UD) and parts of the plant have now been dismantled. The license for whisky production, which was until 1992 when low, Robertson and Co, there is no more since then. A reopening is thus excluded. The distillery was demolished in large parts of the existing warehouses were used for many years by Lagavulin and Port Ellen making it one of the closed Destillerys.
Until the closure was produced with the water from the Locch Leorin. With a mash tun of more than 5.5 tons and eight wash backs of a total of 240,000 liters and two wash stills each 28,000 liters and two spirit stills of 25,000 liters a discharge of 0.8 million liters was achieved.
Old Original bottlings of the distillery are becoming increasingly rare and are almost exclusively found on the special sale of prestigious auction houses such as Bonhams or Christie s, however, are subject to increasing inflation. The Diageo Group sets the existing small holdings in annual special limited editions in small numbers on this, despite the high prices now sell out within a short time and have among connoisseurs as Ardbeg or Karuizwa almost cult status. The single malt whiskys of Islay Port Ellen have-typically a slightly peaty scent, a very specific from the smoke flavor and an oily finish.
