The famous Sazerac Rye Whiskey symbolises the tradition and history of New Orleans and its distinctive bottle is reminiscent of the early settlers and coffee houses of New Orleans. The history of rye whiskey goes back to the 1800s, around the time when the first saloons and coffee houses were established along the streets of New Orleans.
In the mid-19th century, the Sazerac coffee house was a well-known bar in New Orleans. The house cocktail served there was originally made with Sazerac de Forge et Fils cognac, mixed with sugar syrup and Peychaud s Bitters (created by pharmacist Antoine Amédée Peychaud). A glass rinsed with absinthe (or later a substitute such as Herbsaint) was also characteristic. Towards the end of the 19th century, the phylloxera plague devastated the vineyards in France, leading to a shortage and increase in the price of cognac. As a substitute, American rye whiskey was established as the basis for the Sazerac cocktail, which is still the standard ingredient today.
Thomas H. Handy acquired the Sazerac Coffee House and began importing and bottling spirits brands, including the Sazerac brand. His business developed into today s Sazerac company. The now widely recognised Sazerac Rye Whiskey is produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery. It is a tribute to the classic New Orleans rye whiskey style and is often referred to as baby Saz to distinguish it from the older, rarer rye from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Rye whiskey is the rediscovered ancestor of today s bourbon, distilled from rye by the early farmers and this is the legendary whiskey that started it all and the edition of the famous multi-award winning rye whiskey from the Buffalo Trace distillery, world renowned with the legendary bourbon and rye whiskeys of Pappy Van Winkle, William Larue Weller, Eagle Rare and George T. Stagg.
The Sazerac Rye is a Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, which means that it must contain at least 51% rye in the mash bill and is matured in new, charred oak barrels. On the nose, the coveted Sazearc shows clear notes of rye spice (clove, black pepper, some cinnamon), accompanied by sweet hints of caramel and vanilla. There are also often citrus notes (orange or lemon peel) and sometimes a hint of aniseed, liquorice or mint. The flavour is spicy, peppery, fresh and balanced with a pleasant sweetness (caramel, brown sugar), notes of dried fruit, a light oak note and sometimes the aniseed or mint notes typical of rye. The finish is medium-long, warming and leaves a pleasant mix of lingering spice, some sweetness and a hint of dry oak. The coveted and luxurious 18 Years Sazerac whiskeys from the Buffallo Trace Antique Collection also offer a significantly deeper, more complex and unique taste experience characterised by long oak maturation. It changes a little from batch to batch, but is always breathtaking and has received countless awards for this since 2006, scoring 94.5 points from Jim Murray. The magnificent 18 Years Sazerac Straight Rye (Fall 2008) from the limited Buffalo Trace Antique Collection was named World Whiskey of the Year by Jim Murray in 2010 and, like the other rare bottlings from Old Rip Van Winkle, William Larue Weller, George T.
