Bourbon Whiskey

Bu rare and selected Bourbon Whiskey

Bourbon whiskey is one of the US whiskey varieties that is mainly made from corn and is certainly one of the world s best-known whiskeys. The name is derived from the historical connection with the Old Bourbon area, which today is also known as Bourbon County in Kentucky, and was named after a French royal family, the Bourbons. The production principle, which dates back to the 18th century, is exactly the same as for malt whiskies, but its grain mixture must contain at least 51% corn, although more is usually used. The remainder can consist of various grains and a mash is then prepared from this grain mixture, which is then distilled in the traditional way after fermentation and stored in new, charred oak barrels.
If a bourbon whiskey has been matured for more than two years and has no added flavourings or other spirits, it can be called straight bourbon. If a straight bourbon has been aged for less than four years, it must show the exact age and the same applies as for Scotch whisky: only the youngest distillate in the bottling is relevant for labelling.
Bourbon whiskey is not subject to a statutory minimum ageing period, as is the case with Scotch whisky - a distinction is made between several different variants of bourbon with different qualities. This starts with blended bourbon. This is blended from several barrels in order to obtain a product that is as uniform as possible and to minimise variations in flavour. A blended bourbon whiskey basically consists of different bourbon whiskeys, but it must contain at least 51% of an unblended straight bourbon. This is followed by blended straight bourbon whiskey, which consists solely of straight bourbons that are blended together to achieve an even better flavour.
The crowning glory of American whiskey art are the vintage bottlings and the single barrel bourbon, which is bottled directly from a single barrel and is comparable to the single cask whiskies. These special bourbon whiskeys are only available in small quantities or strictly limited editions. The world s most famous and best Kentucky straight bourbon whiskies in this category include in particular the rare and old bottlings from Van Winkle with Old Rip Van Winkle and Pappy Van Winkle, A. H. Hirsch, Four Roses, George T. Stagg, William Larue Weller, Wild Turkey, Willett, Heaven Hill, Eagle Rare and the legendary old Stitzel Weller Bottlings. Many of these exceptional and outstanding old bourbon whiskeys are among the absolute rarities on the market today and make every collector s heart beat faster.
