The first instalment of the Inga Saga Trilogy is dedicated to Earl Magnus Erlendssan, who was born in 1075 when the Orkney Islands were still part of Norway. His Viking ancestors were fearsome warriors whose code of heroism, hatred and honour through revenge shaped their brutal lives. Into this world came Magnus, a man like no other Orkney Earl, who spread Christianity. The peace-loving Magnus was different from his cousin Haakon, who remained imbued with a fighting spirit. Haakon was envious and ambitious and strove for self-aggrandisement. Their story is a classic tale of the struggle between good versus evil. The treachery and tragedy in Earl Magnus life explain his prominent position in the Northern literature. Magnus ruled together with his cousin Haakon from 1108 to 1115, when their supporters fell out. Peace was negotiated and the earls agreed to meet and bring only two ships each. The treacherous Haakon arrived with eight ships and captured his saintly cousin. The Norwegian chieftains decided that one of the earls must die. After his standard-bearer refused to undertake the task, Haakon ordered his cook to kill Magnus, which he did by slaying him with an axe. Magnus life is celebrated in two Icelandic sagas and in the Orkney Inga saga. He was buried where he died and, according to legend, the rocky area around the site immediately turned into a green field.
The fame of Magnus, who was canonised just 20 years after his death, is upheld by the stunning cathedral built by his nephew in Kirkwall. St Magnus Cathedral was described by J. Moodie Heddle, Orkney and Sbetland, 1920, as indisputably the most magnificent monument to Norwegian rule in Scotland. Work began in 1137 and continued for several hundred years. In 1917, a secret cavity was discovered in one of the columns, containing a box of old bones, including a skull that had been injured with an axe. The influence of Earl Magnus spread far and wide, the first name becoming popular in Orkney, particularly in the case of Magnus Eunson, a man forever associated with the founding of the Highland Park distillery in 1798.
The Highland Park archive is home to many venerable old bottles, one in particular from around 1870 was perfect inspiration for the celebration of Earl Magnus life. Working with Stölzle Flaconnage, Highland Park s specialist glassware supplier, a special bottle was created for the fine Highland Park Earl Magnus, with all the flaws and imperfections to match the original. The image of Earl Magnus on the original label of the archive bottle from 1870 was inspired by old stained glass windows. The effect of the label is optimally emphasised by the development of this simple, open-fronted and etched oak wooden box.
An exquisite and very special Highland Park Orkney Islands single malt Scotch whisky presented in an exclusive open fronted etched oak box featuring the story of Earl Magnus. With this Earl Magnus limited edition one, Highland Park continues its tradition of reflecting the character and qualities of the legendary Norse gods and important figures in history in a fine old Scotch whisky and is a tribute to the skilled and dedicated craftsmen who built St Magnus Cathedral.
