The second release in the Inga Saga Trilogy is dedicated to Saint Magnus, one of six canonised Norsemen born in the 11th and 12th centuries when the Orkney Islands were part of Norway. Among them were warriors and scholars: Saint Magnus was a cross between these two extremes. He is described in the Orkney Inga Saga as a man of extraordinary nobility, tall, with a fine, intelligent appearance. He was a man of strong virtue, successful in war, wise, eloquent, generous and magnanimous, gave money with open hands and sensible advice and was altogether the most popular man described. He was born in 1075 under the name Maguus Erlendsson. He proved his saintly virtues at the age of 18. King Magnus Barelegs took him on an expedition to the Hebrides and beyond. As they approached Wales, they encountered the fleet of Hugh the Strong and Hugh the Proud, sons of the Irish king, in the Menai strait. Both parties prepared for battle, with the exception of St Magnus, who refused to fight as he had no quarrel with anyone there. He said: God will protect me, and although he did not take cover, he was not wounded as he sang psalms throughout the battle.
Of course, St Magnus was not always so meek and mild; as ruler of the Orkney Islands, it would have been impossible for him to survive in difficult times without occasional severity. Compared to his contemporaries, however, St Magnus was a man of peace, contemplation and scholarship; spiritual intensity is a feature of Magnus Saga rather than violence and cruelty. It is a life story of Christian devotion and forgiveness, qualities not normally associated with the Vikings, and includes the healing of the sick, crippled, blind and mentally ill. Saint Magnus was murdered by his treacherous cousin Haakon and only canonised 20 years later.
The influence of Saint Magnus was widespread, more than 20 churches were dedicated to him and he was the inspiration for the novel Magnus by George Mackay Brown and again for The Martyrdom of St Magnus by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. The forcmune became popular in Orkney, particularly in the name of Magnus Eunson, a man forever associated with the founding of the Highland Park distillery in 1798.
The Highland Park archive is home to many venerable old bottles, one in particular from around 1870 was perfect inspiration for the celebration of the life of Saint Magnus. In collaboration with Stölzle Flaconnage, Highland Park s specialist glassware supplier, a special bottle has been created for the fine Highland Park Saint Magnus, with all the flaws and imperfections to match the original. The image of Saint Magnus on the original label of the archive bottle from 1870 was inspired by old stained glass windows. The effect of the label is optimally emphasised by the development of this simple, open-fronted and etched oak crate.
An exquisite and very special vintage 1998 12 years Highland Park Orkney Islands Single Malt Scotch whisky presented in an exclusive open fronted etched oak box featuring the story of Saint Magnus. With the Saint Magnus limited edition 2, Highland Park continues its tradition of reflecting the character and qualities of the legendary Norse gods and important figures in history in a fine old Scotch whisky and is a tribute to the skilled and dedicated craftsmen who built St Magnus Cathedral.
