The history of the distillery Ladyburn is as short as it is legendary; for less than a decade, this Lowland distillery produced its elegant, distinctive single malt. Built in 1966, the stills were silenced for good as early as 1975, and with only nine years of operation, the Ladyburn malt whisky distillery is one of the distilleries in Scotland with the shortest history. The distillery site is located in the Lowlands whisky region near the town of Ayrshire. Ladyburn was founded in 1966 by William Grant and Sons Limited, which at the time already owned the Glenfiddich and Balvenie distilleries; the facility was not a distillery in its own right, but rather comprised two pairs of stills at the Girvan distillery. The Girvan distillery was built in 1963, and in 1966 William Grant and Sons decided to undertake a small expansion in the form of Ladyburn. In 1976, Grant and Sons decided to cease production at Ladyburn, and so Ladyburn met the same fate as the Ben Wyvis malt distillery within the Invergordon Highland Grain distillery or the Kinclaith malt distillery within the walls of the Strathclyde Grain distillery, and all the equipment was dismantled. Today, the only remnants of Ladyburn are the few original bottlings and the rare releases from independent bottlers under the name Ayrshire - now a piece of pure, irreplaceable whisky history!
