The Glenmorangie distillery is located in Tain in the Northern Highlands on the coast of the Dornach Firth and is certainly one of the best-known distilleries in Scotland. Evidence of (illegal) whisky distilling in Tain dates back to around 1700, but it is only since 1843 that legal whisky has been distilled at the Glenmorangie distillery founded by the Matheson brothers. Prior to this, a brewery was located in the distillery buildings. By 1880, the distillery was already exporting to Italy and the USA. The original distillery had to be rebuilt in 1883 and Glenmorangie Distillery Co Ltd was founded in 1887. The distillery remained in the hands of the Matheson family until 1918, when MacDonald and Muir took over the company after a production slump caused by the First World War. The distillery was closed from 1931-1936 and 1941-1944. Due to the success of Glenmorangie single malt whisky, the production facilities had to be expanded several times. Two new stills were installed in 1980 and a further four in 1990, so that today the distillery produces with a total of eight stills and is famous for being the distillery with the highest stills. This makes it possible to produce a very light single malt. Glenmorangie is the best-selling single malt whisky on the Scottish market and is known for experimenting with special casks (Margeaux, Cote De Beaune, Port Pipe, Madeira, wine and more) and second cask maturation to produce a variety of exceptional single malts.
In 2004, Glenmorangie PLC took over the Scotch Malt Whisky Society with more than 27,000 members. Since October 2004, the company has belonged to the Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton Group (LVMH), which took over the McDonald family s share. After 161 years, the family withdrew from the whisky business. Today, in addition to the actual distillery in Tain, Glenmorangie PLC also owns the Ardbeg distillery (acquired in 1997) on Islay.
One principle of the Glenmorangie distillery has been preserved to this day: there should always be exactly 16 employees at Glenmorangie, the 16 men of Tain. In recent times, however, this only refers to the actual producers in the distilling process; in total, around 90 people are employed at the distillery, for example in the warehouse, shop and administration. In addition, one of the 16 men of Tain is now a woman. The Glenmorangie Highland single malt Scotch whiskies are among the world s best today and the limited edition whiskies from the Private Edition and the old single cask whiskies from the 1970s and 1980s are particularly sought after by connoisseurs and enthusiasts today and demonstrate the original character and exceptional quality of the old Glenmorangie single malts.
