Glendronach is a whisky distillery in Forgue near Huntly in Aberdeenshire in the Eastern Highlands of Scotland. The Glendronach distillery was founded in 1826 by James Allardice, was originally a joint venture between local merchants and farmers and quickly became popular with the London aristocracy through the mediation of the Earl of Gordon. The distillery changed its owners several times. From 1920 to 1960, it belonged to Charles Grant, one of the sons of William Grant, the owner of the Glenfiddich distillery. Wm Teacher and Sons then took over Glendronach. In 1996, the distillery was closed by its parent company Allied Domecq, reopened in 2002 and sold to Pernod Ricard in 2005. In 2008, the distillery was sold to Benriach Distillery Co Ltd. Since then, it has been under the management of Billy Walker and his two South African partners. The barley for the Glendronach single malt Scotch whisky is sourced from neighbouring farms in line with traditional production methods. The water is taken from the nearby Dronac Burn. The fermentation process takes place in an Oregon pine fermentation vat. By expanding from 2 to 4 stills, a larger capacity was achieved, although their appearance has changed little. Today, the stills are heated indirectly with steam and the traditional coal-fired floor maltings were also in operation for a long time.
Glendronach whiskies are characterised by a rich, complex and full-bodied flavour profile and are matured in selected sherry and American oak casks. Typical flavours include dark chocolate, vanilla, dried fruits such as sultanas and figs, as well as spices and a subtle oak note. The sherry influences give Glendronach whiskies a deep colour and a pleasant sweetness - among whisky connoisseurs, Glendronach single malt whisky is often referred to as a sherry monster. The old Glendronach single cask whiskies matured in exquisite and select sherry casks are particularly sought after today by connoisseurs, whisky collectors and lovers of exclusive old Scotch whiskies due to their exceptional quality and complex aromas with a deep flavour intensity.
