Gordon and MacPhail is arguably the world s most famous independent bottler of Scotch whisky and was founded on 24th May 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail in Elgin as a high quality grocery and liquor shop specialising in tea, wine and spirits and has now enjoyed over 150 years of success. This original shop still exists today and is a landmark in Elgin.
One of the first employees of the young company at the time was the 15-year-old apprentice John Urquhart, who soon turned out to be a studious and inquisitive pupil and not only accompanied James Gordon on his trips to the many Scottish distilleries, but also helped with the marrying and blending of the various casks and whiskies. In 1915, John Urquhart took over the business after the death and retirement of the two company founders and continued to run it until it was handed over to his son George Urquhart in 1933. In the 1930s and 1940s in particular, extensive stocks of selected single malts were built up. Today, Gordon and MacPhail is run by the fourth generation of the Urquhart family and has the undisputed largest stock of Scotch whiskies, especially very old Scotch whiskies, in the world. To date, Gordon and MacPhail has brought a large number of single malt whiskies onto the market and currently has more than 350 different whiskies from over 70 Scottish distilleries in its range.
The extensive stocks of rare and no longer available and many very old whiskies made it possible for Gordon and MacPhail to write whisky history and records several times. Together with Glenfiddich, Gordon and MacPhail was one of the first companies in the 1960s to supplement the then popular blended malts with single malt bottlings and launched these bottlings, which are now known worldwide and are particularly popular with collectors, enthusiasts and connoisseurs, on the market under the Connoisseurs Choice label. At the time, this was ridiculed by many in the trade and regarded as unsuccessful, but proved to be the right decision and ensured that today almost every whisky lover only buys single malt whisky and the number of blended malts has fallen significantly. With this bold step and wise foresight, George Urquhart of Gordon and MacPhail ensured that today single malt whisky is one of the most successful and now special bottlings are among the most expensive spirits in the world.
Gordon and MacPhail set another , or rather several, milestones with the oldest single malt Scotch whisky presented on 11th March 2010 - a 70 year old Mortlach, distilled in 1940 and bottled after 70 years of cask maturation. This was followed on 20 September 2012 by a 70-year-old Glenlivet single malt from the Generations series and on 2 September 2015 by another Mortlach single cask whisky distilled in November 1939 and matured in Sherry Butt no. 2475 for 75 years in a limited edition of 100 elaborately designed decanters - the presentation took place in splendour at the Royal Opera house in London. In 2014, a series called the Private Collection was launched for special single malt whiskies, in which special premium single malts from renowned distilleries are bottled and offered in limited editions. In 1993, Gordon and MacPhail and the Urquhart family acquired the old Benromach distillery in Forres in Scotland s Speyside. The dilapidated distillery and its buildings were completely renovated and modernised, and the official reopening took place in 1998 by Prince Charles himself. Today, Gordon and MacPhail single malt whiskies are recognised for their outstanding quality and are in high demand among connoisseurs and enthusiasts worldwide.
Gordon and MacPhail today occupies an absolutely unique position in the world of Scotch whisky. The company combines over 125 years of tradition and family management with a visionary maturation policy that gives a wide audience access to unrivalled whisky treasures. Gordon and MacPhail is therefore far more than just an independent bottler - they are an institution and a guarantee for quality and rare whisky experiences.
