William Larue Weller ist mit eine der bekanntesten amerikanischen Bourbon Whiskey Marke, die ursprünglich der Stitzel-Weller Distilling Company gehörte, aber im Verlauf der vergangenen 3 Jahrzehnte mehrmals den Besitzer wechselte und heute, wie Buffalo Trace zur Sazerac Company gehört und auch in der Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky hergestellt wird. Die Stitzel Distillery war in Louisville, Kentucky ansässig und produzierte Whiskey für den Großhandel der Weller Familie, wurde später durch diese aufgekauft und somit zur Stitzel-Weller Distilling Company. Während der Prohibition stand man unter der Aufsicht der U.S. Regierung und prouzierte während dieser Zeit Alkohol für medizinische Zwecke. Man fertigte bei Stitzel Marken wie W.L. Weller, Cabin Still, Rebell Yell, Old Fitzgerald und Old Rip van Winkle. Mit den Jahren gingen diese Marken aber in den Besitz der verschiedensten Eigentümer über. Nach dem Verkauf 1972 und einigen wirren Jahren, schloß die Destillerie 1991 für immer Ihre Pforten. Die Mashbill für die Bourbon Whiskeys unter der Marke Weller enthält zum überwiegendem Teil Mais als Basis und entgegen den meisten anderen Bourbons, bei denen Roggen eine entscheidende Rolle spielt, vertraut man bei Weller auf die Verwendung von Weizen als zweites Getreide. Benannt nach William Larue Weller, einem bekanntem Bourbon Distiller in den frühen Jahren des Staates Kentucky, war es William Larue Weller der als erster den damals üblich Roggen durch Weizen in der Mashbill für seinen Bourbon Whiskey ersetzte und angeblich 1849 seinen ersten Wheated Bourbon produzierte.

Among connoisseurs, this Bourbon Whiskey is considered to be absolutely first-class and is one of the most sought-after Bourbon Whiskeys. At the age of over 12 years, this Bourbon is also one of the oldest bottlings from the William Larue Weller Antique Collection and is regarded as a particularly exceptional rarity - almost not to be found anywhere in the world today.
Born in 1825, William Larue Weller was one of the early distilling pioneers in Kentucky. After serving in the Louisville Brigade during the 1840s, William Larue Weller remained in Louisville and continued his family heritage of whiskey distilling. Mr. Weller was famous for being the firts distiller to produce Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey using wheat instead of rye in the mash bill. As the most distinguished distiller of this time, William Larue Weller spent many years educating consumers about the different styles of bourbon, and the special flavous that wheat imparted to his whiskey. The William Larue Weller line has always been a bit special among Buffalo Trace s offerings. Weller himself is often credited as the bottler who invented wheated bourbon, so it is appropriate that Weller is Buffalo Trace s signature wheated line. Add to that the notoriety Weller bourbons received last year when first Esquire and then numerous copycats declared it the accessible substitute for the elusive Pappy Van Winkle whiskeys, notoriety that caused a run on the liquor stores and a short-term shortage. If you follow that logic, that should make the Antique Collection s William Larue Weller the closest thing you can get to Pappy Van Winkle. The Weller limited Edition 2016 is an extra special installment. After spending 12 years and seven month on the 3rd and 6th floors of Warehouses D, K and L, this whiskey was bottled uncut and unfiltered at a staggering 135.4 proof (67.7% abv) - one of the strongest Weller release ever.
